The Monte Volturino represents an infinite reservoir of information for those trying to reconstruct the geological history of the Mediterranean and in particular of the Lucanian Apennines. An attentive observer can detect, by looking at the sides of the relief from afar, different curved geometries, which recall the shapes of a folded blanket. Approaching and interpreting the outcropping formations, it turns out that these windings belong to layers of rock, once lying on a flat and extended surface, thousands of meters below the surface of the sea. How could rocks be deformed this way? And above all when? Are they still up today? And what are the indications that suggest that these formations were originally placed in ancient sea beds?
The geological-tourist walk, during which the ExtraGEO staff will answer all these questions, will take place in the protected area of the Appenino Lucano Val D'Agri Lagonegrese National Park, more precisely in the municipal area of Marsicovetere: one of the most beautiful villages high in Basilicata. The Monte Volturino - whose name derives from the Latin vultur (-the vulture-) - is a summit situated in the heart of the Lucanian Apennines and rises up to reach the 1836 m altitude above sea level, in the middle of a vast and articulated mountain group, of which it is the highest peak.
From a geological point of view, the Volturino is identified as an important geological site, which documents a significant interval in the geological and deformation history of the Italian peninsula. The site is a place of outcrop of various types of sedimentary rocks, deposited in an ancient and deep marine basin, called Tetide, existing when the dinosaurs dominated the emerged lands. Carbonates, flints, marls and shale alternate in an articulated stratigraphic succession, made more complex by the Apennine orogenesis: the well-known phenomenon of the raising of the mountains that caused the closure of the Tethys and the emergence of the Apennines.
During the walk, the participants will be introduced, with an informative approach, to the different evolutionary stages of the Lucanian Apennines and to the geological, geomorphological and hydrogeological characteristics of the Volturino. All in the breathtaking panoramic background of the Agri Valley below.
