New York City, 1962. Tony Lip is a bouncer at the Copacabana, but the venue has to close for two months due to renovations. Tony has a wife and two children, and he has to find a way to make ends meet for those two months. The opportunity presents itself in the form of Dr. Donald Shirley, a musician who is about to leave for a concert tour with his trio across the Southern States, from Iowa to Mississippi. Too bad that Shirley is African American, in an age where black skin is not welcome, especially in the southern United States. And that Tony, an Italian American who grew up with the idea that blacks are animals, has developed a good deal of racism towards them.
