People with dementia and caregivers are the two sides of the same coin. Psychologists such as Dr. Oriana De Pascali, therapists such as Vincenzo Sanapo, Clara Magazzino, Adele Cacciatore and Giulia Di Seclì, and Healthcare Workers like Orlando Carretta, aim to relieve caregivers from their constant commitment and put their users to the test with dementia with activities aimed at awakening and increasing self-esteem.
Caregivers will work with mindfulness, working "with" people's skills rather than focusing on their problems, teaching new techniques to reconsider distressing thoughts in a detached way, reduce stress levels and improve mood. Along with mindfulness we will also work with music therapy, a discipline that allows us to experience a dimension in which we are protagonists of our own wellbeing and, indirectly, of the well-being of the other, which allows the mobilization of the internal resources of each individual, in order to enhance them. and make them usable.
Instead, it will be the artisapies to support the work of users with dementia, working on emotions to improve their quality of life, creating a neutral and protected area where they can feel free to express themselves and connect to their unconscious, reactivate and feel able and free. Because this disease does not compromise the emotional memory if not in the later stages, and it is precisely to this that art therapy and theater therapy rely to restore the identity of the person. The work through images and above all through the body, gives the possibility to realize emotions and thoughts, thus offering a means of communication parallel to the word favoring the reorganization or giving it a new meaning.
