Built in all its magnificence between the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries, the Basilica of Santa Caterina in Alessandria
it is a distinguished example and union of Romanesque and Gothic art and is considered, for the pictorial cycles present inside, second only to the Basilica of San Francesco in Assisi.
The visit will start right from the Basilica and will continue inside the Franciscan cloister, adjacent to the Basilica, enriched by seventeenth-century frescoes, the work of the reformed friar Fra Giuseppe da Gravina. The room of the former refectory of the Convent houses the small but interesting museum where it is possible to admire important sacred objects, reliquaries and relics including the finger of Saint Catherine herself. The walk, through the streets of the historic center embellished with ancient and precious noble palaces, will continue to Piazza San Pietro, where the ducal palace and the seventeenth-century Mother church named after the two princes of the Apostles, Peter and Paul and the chapel dedicated to the latter, the theater, until the middle of the last century of the phenomenon known as tarantism.
